How we work with clients in Fort McMurray
Fort McMurray is the urban service area of the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo in northeastern Alberta, at the centre of the Athabasca oil sands region. Wood Buffalo counted 72,326 residents in the 2021 Census, across 60,844 square kilometres.
Where the work usually begins
It often starts with the designations: who is named on each RRSP, RRIF and TFSA, and whether a spouse is a successor holder or only a beneficiary.

“The question is whether your family's plan is better than the government's.”

Alberta rules that shape your plan
A plan for an Alberta household is built on Alberta numbers. These are the 2026 figures we work from: a top combined tax rate of 48%, below British Columbia and Ontario, a probate fee capped at $525, and corporate rules that matter for incorporated professionals.
Income tax in Alberta, 2026
Alberta taxes income at 8% up to $61,200, 10% to $154,259, 12% to $185,111, 13% to $246,813, 14% to $370,220 and 15% above that. Federal rates run from 14% to 33% on top. The highest combined rate is 48%, on taxable income above $370,220.
Probate in Alberta
The court fee for a grant of probate or administration is set by the net value of property in Alberta: $35 up to $10,000, $135 up to $25,000, $275 up to $125,000, $400 up to $250,000, and $525 above $250,000. Because the fee stops at $525, the larger costs at death are usually the tax on registered accounts and capital gains, not probate.
Professional corporations in Alberta
Active business income in an Alberta corporation is taxed at 11% combined up to the $500,000 small business limit, and 23% above it. In Alberta, a physician's or dentist's spouse must hold non-voting shares, which shapes how a medical or dental corporation pays dividends to the family.

Questions from Fort McMurray
Honest answers to the questions we hear most often.
Start with the questions a good planner should be asking you, about your income, your corporation, your timeline and your family (see questions your last advisor never asked). Then check the basics: registration with Designed Securities Ltd., regulated by CIRO and a member of CIPF, how fees are charged, and whether the plan covers tax, retirement, insurance and estate together.
Yes. Meetings can be held virtually anywhere in Alberta, including Fort McMurray, and in person in Calgary for anyone who prefers it. Office hours are Monday to Friday, 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM Mountain Time, and weekends by appointment. Fort McMurray is on Mountain Time, the same as Calgary.
We operate on a fee-based model. For investment management, fees are based on a percentage of assets under management, which aligns our interests: we do well when you do well. Financial planning and insurance services may have separate fee structures, which we'll always explain upfront. The first review is free.
Alberta charges a court fee for a grant of probate or administration, set by the net value of property in Alberta: $35 up to $10,000, $135 up to $25,000, $275 up to $125,000, $400 up to $250,000, and $525 above $250,000. The fee is capped at $525, so the bigger planning questions at death are usually tax on registered accounts and capital gains.
If your spouse or common-law partner is named as beneficiary, the RRSP or RRIF rolls over to them tax-free. Otherwise the full value is added to income on your final tax return. For a TFSA, name your spouse as successor holder, not only as beneficiary, so the account stays tax-sheltered.
