What a financial plan covers

The No. 160 was built one mechanism at a time, each fitted to the last. A financial plan works the same way: seven complications, fitted together. Each one has a free calculator or a plain answer you can read before we meet.

Retirement income

Projections for retirement income, investment growth and tax scenarios, including when to start CPP.

RRSP, TFSA and RESP

Which account to fund first, and how to structure RRSP, TFSA and RESP contributions around your income.

Tax-efficient withdrawals

Asset location and withdrawal sequencing to minimize your lifetime tax, from the RRIF minimum to drawing down a large RRSP.

Tax planning

Proactive tax planning before year-end, pension income splitting and the OAS clawback.

Cash flow, debt and education

Cash flow and budget planning, paying down the mortgage or investing, and education funding.

Insurance and estate

Life, disability and critical illness coverage tailored to your income and obligations, plus beneficiaries and wealth transfer.

Professional corporation

Salary or dividends, the corporate investment portfolio, Individual Pension Plan (IPP) analysis and holding company structure.

From first call to a working plan

Working with a new advisor shouldn't feel overwhelming. Here is exactly what the process looks like, from first call to ongoing partnership.

Week 1

Introduction call

  • A casual, no-pressure conversation about your goals and concerns.
  • You ask how we work and what we charge.
  • We decide together if there is a mutual fit, with no obligation either way.
Week 2

Discovery meeting

  • A deep dive into your complete financial picture: income, assets, debts, insurance and estate.
  • We review your current investment accounts and tax returns.
  • We discuss your short-term and long-term goals.
Weeks 3 to 4

Analysis and strategy

  • A comprehensive analysis of your current financial position.
  • Opportunities identified: tax savings, portfolio improvements, insurance gaps.
  • Projections for retirement income, investment growth and tax scenarios.
  • Clear, written recommendations with prioritized action items.
Week 5

Plan presentation

  • We walk through your personalized financial plan together.
  • Every recommendation explained, and why it matters.
  • Your questions answered, taking as much time as you need, then next steps and an implementation timeline.
Weeks 6 to 8

Implementation

  • Open and fund investment accounts.
  • Portfolio construction and asset allocation.
  • Insurance applications if needed.
  • Coordination with your accountant and lawyer on tax and estate items.
Ongoing

Partnership

  • Regular portfolio reviews and rebalancing.
  • Annual financial plan updates as your life evolves.
  • Proactive tax planning before year-end.
  • Available when you have a question or a major life event.

What to bring to your first meeting. Don't worry about having everything perfect. We'll guide you through what we need.

Financial planning questions

Honest answers to the questions we hear most often.

Both. Investment management is important, but it's just one piece. We provide comprehensive financial planning including tax optimization, retirement projections, insurance analysis, estate planning, and corporate structuring.

It's a casual, no-pressure conversation. We learn about your goals and situation, you ask questions about how we work, and we figure out together if there's a mutual fit. No sales pitch, no obligation.

We generally work with clients who have $500,000+ in investable assets or a household income of $200,000+. That said, we're happy to have an introductory conversation regardless. Sometimes the right time to start planning is before you've accumulated significant wealth.

We operate on a fee-based model. For investment management, fees are based on a percentage of assets under management, which aligns our interests: we do well when you do well. Financial planning and insurance services may have separate fee structures, which we'll always explain upfront.

This is one of our specialties. We help physicians optimize their salary-dividend mix, manage corporate investment portfolios, evaluate IPPs, and structure holding companies. Visit our Physicians page for more details.

Kaetyn works with clients across Canada. Meetings can be held in person in Calgary or by video anywhere in Canada.
